Summer so far...

Howdy! I hope everyone has had a great Summer so far! I have been up to two Orientations working as an Ambassador (an awesome club everyone should go out for!). The last two have been huge! There were about 240 students plus their families for the July 15th Orientation! Hopefully if you went up, you had a great time meeting your future classmates and spending some quality time with the Laker Leaders :)

I have been crazy busy this summer working two jobs and taking two online classes! (Yikes!) But I still have made time to hang out with my friends and family! Since I have been so busy this summer, it has just flown by! I can't believe its the end of July already and in just a month we will be moving in up at school!

So, if your still looking for somewhere to go for college well Mercyhurst "is the place"! Check out our summer tours and apply online! Summer is a great time to visit campus because the weather is nice, and Erie has so much going on in the Summer. 8 Great Tuesdays, Block Parties, Roar on the Shore not to mention going to the beach on Presque Isle! So make your way up to Erie and check out the school! While you are there you can see the new building go up!

  1. Hey, I think I saw you at orientation! Do you have any advice for freshmen who want to become Ambassadors?

  2. Hey JJ! You very well might have seen me! I hope your orientation was great and you got your questions answered!
If any Freshmen want to become Ambassadors they should definitely come to our club meetings at the beginning of Fall Term! We will have flyers up around campus with the dates, times and location! So be on the lookout! Ambassadors is, in my opinion, one of the best clubs on campus! We give tours, work orientation and move in day as well as many other events on campus. You get to meet and work with a great group of friends. We have a lot of fun while we work. Plus, we get to wear awesome green jackets!
Don't forget there are tons of other great clubs on campus too - you can check them out at the annual RSCO (Registered Student Clubs and Organizations) fair. We hold the RSCO fair every year early in September so that all students can check out what Mercyhurst has to offer!
I hope this helps! If you have questions about anything else Mercyhurst related please don't hesitate to ask! :)

  3. Hi I am a senior in High school now, wow I still cannot get used the idea. I live in Ohio, but Mercyhurst is one of my top three College choices, I wanted to ask you about the school and my top concern unfortunately being money, financial aid. I was specifically wondering about the education major program, as that is what I want to do.

  4. Hi! I'm glad to hear Mercyhurst is in your top 3! I love Mercyhurst - from the friends I've made here to the professors to our gorgeous (but windy!) campus. If you haven't come to visit Mercyhurst already, I would definitely schedule a tour, being on the campus helps you get a feel for the school and if it is a good fit for you.

Mercyhurst is expensive because it is a private school. However, this means that they can give out more scholarships for academics and extracurricular activities than most state schools (in PA at least). You are also able to use federal grants and loans as part of your financial aid. I would suggest applying to the schools you want early. This gives you plenty of time to work with the financial aid offices and admissions at the different colleges you are looking into. When you do get your financial aid, see if there is anything else you are eligible for. You can also apply for federal work study, and get a job on campus to help pay for school as well. And don't forget to apply for scholarships outside of your colleges! Local community groups like the Elks Club or Rotary Club often give out scholarships to Seniors, as do many churches, synagogues, and ethnic groups. The website www.fastweb.com is a great way to search for even more scholarship opportunities - they even have a scholarship for left-handed people! Plus it's free to sign up! :)

Now, you said you were interested in studying Education! I'm not sure what area of Education you were interested in, but we offer several different programs.

I am in the Middle Level Program, with a specialization in English which will allow me to teach grades 4-8. The Middle Level program requires you to also take up a minor in your subject area sot that you can teach 7th & 8th grade for that class. Even though I am only a English minor, I am hoping to also get certification in Science as well because I have a lot of science classes from my previous major (Sportsmedicine)! I really like both English and Science so wherever I end up, I will be happy.

We also offer Special Education (PreK-8), Early Childhood (PreK-4), a K-12 certification in Art, World Languages, Music & Buisness Computers and Information Technology. Or the 4+1 Program where you get your Bachelors in a Content area - History, Biology etc - and then your Masters in Education so that you can teach 7-12 grade. You can see all this at http://education.mercyhurst.edu/programs/

I really like the Education department. Even though this is only my first year, I changed majors over the summer last year, I love my classes and my professors have been great! I really like being able to get into the classrooms to observe for my classes it gives me ideas of things I want to teach.

I hope this helps! Definitely ask if you have anymore questions or if I missed something!
